Yet another unecessary remake?

They - Dreamworks - have remade The Ring, a rather good Japanese horror film.

At least we got to see the original: "having optioned the rights, Dreamworks effectively ensured the Japanese original will not be released in the US."

Dreamworks have done some good things, and could make a good, if rather fx-laden movie. But if they want to make a horror movie, why *remake* one? why not just make another movie on a similar theme? I've not seen Ring (though I did rather frighten zotz by coming downstairs the day after he'd seen it in a recently-purchased white nightgown), but by all accounts it's a fine film. It's a shame that US audiences won't get to appreciate it.

Remaking something that's been a hit - or doing a sequel - has always been seen as a smaller risk than doing something new.

Why else do the recent 'Psycho in color'? 'Les Diaboliques in color'? OK, the second one, like The Ring, also means you can do it in English for the subtitle-phobic, but still...

The end result will be like the Italian film industry, where someone complained that you could make Zombies 2 (or 3 or 4 or ..) but never Zombies 1.

No WAY!
Loved The Ring, Ring 2 was no where near as good but Ring O is meant to be ok. I guess Audition will be next, now that is a fine - fine scary film.
