7:50p Sabre-rattling Europe threatens US diplomats with visas
http://go.theregister.com/feed/www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/23/eu_comm_us_visa_threat/ Be nice to our huddled masses, or else
The European Commission has threatened action against US diplomats and service personnel if there's no movement from the United States on visa-free travel this year. Citizens of 12 EU member states currently require visas when travelling to the US, and according to the Commission no tangible progress has been made in talks to change this, "despite all efforts of the Commission and individual member states."…

7:20p North Americans just don't steal handsets, apparently...
http://go.theregister.com/feed/www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/23/rogers_and_imei/ Rogers dodgers
Back in 2005, when he lost his three-day-old Motorola v 635, Pete Gillespie immediately phoned his cell provider, Canada's Rogers Wireless. Among other things, he urged the cellco giant to blacklist the phone's IMEI number so that miscreants couldn't reconnect his $600 purchase to the Canadian airwaves. But the company said it didn't do such things.…

8:29p On The Significance Of The "B" In "Pink B"
It turns out - my better half having checked on the website - that the time that was being displayed at the finish line for the pink group was for the first "A" wave, which means that our times were actually more than two-and-a-half minutes faster. So my actual time was:
Drumroll please.
One hour, nine minutes, and ten seconds.
So colour me even more slightly chuffed. And courtesy of an email from the Great Capital Run organisers, I have pictures, which I'll place behind a cut due to their numbers, size and probable lack of relevance to anyone reading this.

8:16p The Modern Conundrum: Damned If You Do...
Just read a pretty horrifying article about the use of restraining techniques against special needs children in American schools, but I thought that one paragraph in particular did sum up the problem rather neatly:Peterson, the Nebraska professor, illustrates the challenges by citing two recent cases in Iowa. In one, the parents of an 11-year-old who died while being held down called for a ban on restraints; in the other, parents charged that a school failed their son by not restraining him. The boy ran away and drowned.

7:59p Toddler development
**FIXME continues to astonish his parents by demonstrating new abilities.
I have a sent text saved in my phone from last August, when **FIXME was just over one year old. It reads "Another milestone! **FIXME has just had his first proper tantrum. What a joy these early months are."
Today he passed another such milestone. He had a tantrum where he screamed so hard he was sick.
(He was eventually soothed, and then crashed to sleep - it being by then more than obvious that he was over-tired. Poor wee mite.)
